1. George Poplin 1,2,3,4 was born about 1720 and died after 1775 in NC.

Notes:All descendants up to Richard Sr. (b~1766) are validated through census and other data.
William (b. 1748/49) is listed as Richard's (b., 1766) father based on information which suggested this. The time frame was correct and it matched surrounding census data. However, he could also be the Richard that George (b. ~1720) lists as a son, thus making William his brother.

See notes under his son William.

GEORGE POPLIN 1720 - 1775
George Poplin was a very prosperous planter who lived in Chatham County, North Carolina. It has been established that he was born between 1720 and 1726. His wife's name was Averleigh (sometimes spelled Avrilla or Avery). He was the father of nine children whose names were William (my Great, Great, Great, Great, Great Grandfather), John, Jane, Nancy (spelled Nansy), George (spelled Gorg), Richard, Averly (called Avie or Ave, and probably named after her mother), Mimy and Henry.
George was apparently a prominent land owner and is listed in several documents regarding his land including 550 acres granted by a Deed from Lord Granville Agent Relation or Agents. The Lord Granville land was a large tract extending across much of North Carolina. George's land is described as being "along Bear Creek".
At least two of George's sons, William and George, were American Revolutionary War Soldiers. Copies of Pay Vouchers for their services as Revolutionary War Soldiers are on file at the North Carolina State Archives in Raleigh. His son William and wife Averleigh, (called Averey) were also executors of his estate. George was also a man of conviction. He left two of his daughters "one shilling sterling apiece for they're misbehaving women."
An inventory of George's possessions at the settlement of his estate reveals that he was a man of sizable wealth. He owned two slaves along with horses, cattle, sheep, hogs, and geese. He also owned many tools of great value (tools of that time were handmade by blacksmiths and other craftsman). There were also numerous other farm materials and valuable household goods.
George, or someone in his household, was probably literate. Included in his possessions were three old Bibles and one Testament, three Psalters and three spelling books.
Settlement of George's Estate occurred in 1777. It is signed by Averleigh Poplin (here spelled Avirilla).
Note: At this time in history there were no public schools and exact rules had not been established for spelling and punctuation. The same words or names were often spelled several different ways within the same document. For example, George was sometimes spelled Jorg or Jorj; Averleigh was Avrilla or Averly; Poplin was sometimes also spelled Popland or Popling. However, all of the above documentation has been carefully confirmed as being that of George Poplin and family.

It is believed that George Poplin moved to North Carolina from Virginia between 1747 and 1761. In the North Carolina State Library, Raleigh, North Carolina is found a Tithe List (or Tax List) from Goochland County, Virginia and described as follows:
1746 Totals: Southern Parish 1256, Northern Parish 1186, King William Parish 208, 2650 tithes.
The tithe list was made in June and included all male persons of sixteen years and upward, also all negro, mulatto and Indian including women sixteen years and above. "Names of servants are not included in this transcription but is available in most cases on the original." (Such information can sometimes be helpful to show descents via inheritance.)

B. TITHE LIST SOUTHERN PARISH by Archibald Cary 10 June 1747.

The number (2) shown on the Tithe list is apparently the number of persons in the household on the day the census was
taken.

NOTE:
The original of the above document is located in the State Archives, Raleigh, North Carolina. It is in fairly good condition, but faded. The will was apparently transcribed to an attorney or scribe shortly before George's death. The spelling is extremely poor as was typical of that time. Also, the name signed with an X does not necessarily mean that the person could not read or write. It was the custom for many years to sign in that fashion whenever another person such as an attorney or scribe actually wrote the document. This was much as an attorney's seal is used today. This is a true interpretation of the document by W.A. and Betty B. Poplin on 3-30-90.

NOTE: GEORGE POPLIN'S LAND
George Poplin purchased his property from the Lord Granville Land on October 2, 1761. It is described as 550 acres in Orange County on both sides of Bear Creek which is the waters of Rocky River. That part of Orange County later became part of what is now Chatham County. The land surveyed by George Williams, John Miles and W. Churton. Witnesses were Jason Watson and Robert Rainey. He paid ten shillings at the time of purchase and twenty-two shillings per year tax. This tax was very high and was a point of major concern to the planters who bought Granville Land in that area. A Plat of the land which was marked in the survey only by certain trees reveals a rectangular area crossed diagonally by Bear Creek. On August 12, 1766, George sold 137 acres of this land to a Mr. Charles Smith. Recorded in the Chatham County Deed Book, Page 445 is the sale of a portion of George Poplin's land by his son, George.

2. William Poplin 6,7,8,9 was born in Feb 1749 and died on 2 Jan 1835 at age 85.

The 1850 census of Stanley Co. NC Record 741 lists Jeremiah 43 farmer, Nancy 35, John 19, Green 17, Richard 14, Mary 12, Macey 10, Caroline8, Henry 6, Elizabeth 2. Richard would have to have been born in 1835 or 1836 to be 14 in the 1850 census. It appears that this Jeremiah is Richard's (b. 1766) father.

The "Poplin Patter" Volume 2, Issue 1 mentions a letter written in 1963 which references Jerry Poplin, Sr., as the son of Richard "Dick" Poplin, Sr. The 1860 census lists Jerry Poplin age 50 living with wife Nancy age 45 and children including Carolina 15, Henry 13, Eliza 11 and Jerry 7. We believe this is Jerry, Jr. inferred in the Poplin Patter letter. If true, it implies that the Richard Poplin age 84 in the 1850 census is Richard "Dick" Sr., born about 1766. Also, the 1810 Montgomery County, NC census lists a "R. Poplin household including 1 male over 45, 2 males 10-16 and 1 male under 10. This is probably Richard, about 45 and Jeremiah about 3.

The Poplin Patter Volume 1, Issue 2 describes a Bible of Richard Henry Poplin, Sr. The 1860 census of Stanly County lists "Henry Poplin" age 94 living with Richard Poplin age 52. This is most likely Richard, Sr. (Henry) living with Richard Jr.

The 1775 will of George (on file) lists both Henry and Richard. The 1850 census has Richard 84 (b. abt. about 1766) and Henry 80 (b. abt. 1770). However, what is not clear is whether Richard is a son or grandson of George. We believe that George had at least two sons old enough to be Richard's father, William (b. 1748/49), John (born?) and possibly even George (junior b. Dec. 1752). A section in George's will complicates matters more when he refers to "my two sons, Richard and Henry". This is either penmanship error or a reference to grandchildren.

The pension records mention 3 children
. William married in 1769 with Lucy 16 yrs old and William 20. Richard was born before father's entrance into Revolutionary Wwar
1840 Census record - Richard Sr. is 70 - 80. His mother Lucy is listed at 98 yrs old in this census.

1768 - Montgomery Cty - Revolutionary War - ~19 yrs old
~1769- Not with Lucy due to War
~1770 -Montgomery Cty or Chatham? (see below)
~1780 - 1784 Moore County
1784 - 1786 Georgia
~1787 Back in Montgomery County

In 1780 Richard moved with his mother and father to Moore, County, North Carolina. This statement is reinforced by the fact that hs father William cashed Pay Vouchers in Moore County in 1782 and 1784.

William Poplin#W 10231North Carolina
Wife's name was Lucy. 16.180 William Poplin of Montgomery co NC was a private in the company commanded by Col Alston in North Carolina for 9 months. He was placed on the roll 12 July 1833. State of North Carolina, Montgomery co, 10 Oct 1832 appeared in court William Poplin, resident of said county and state, 83 y/o. He was born Feb 1749 and when he entered service, he lived in Chatham co. Col Philip Alston raised a troop of horsemen in Chatham co who were engaged to serve 3 months and they marched into South Carolina to join General Asher'ss army who was then in South Carolina not far from Charleston. They joined said army near the Santin River and Poplin was placed under the command of Col Alston and Capt Walsh (who came from Taylorsville NC). From this place, Ashe's army crossed the Santin River at Nihon's Ferry leaving Charleston about 9 miles to the left and thence up the Savannah River to the town of Savannah Georgia where part of the British army was stationed. Ashe's army moved to Augusta and hence to Brier Creek in pursuit of the British who tore up the bridge at Brier Creek. Ashe's army halted here for about a week and was attacked by the British who had re-crossed the river. The Americans were defeated and 130 American prisoners were taken including Poplin. The prisoners were taken about 15 miles down the river to Savannah where for a week to 10 days they were confined in a large house built for a church. From here they were carried down to the mouth of the Savannah River and put on board a prison ship that was laying there. Poplin was confined here with other prisoners for about 6 months when he was induced from fear of starving to death to enlist in the British service. During his imprisonment he was given a pint of rice a day and 3/4 pounds of fresh beef a week. He left Col Alston on the same prison ship. After enlisting in British service he was carried up the to Savannah and made to work on the fortifications there for 4 to 5 weeks. At the time, Savannah was surrounded by the American Army under General Lincoln on one side and the French on the other. Poplin escaped and went to General Lincoln who allowed him to go home to Chatham. A guard accompanied Poplin and oers that were in a similarsituationn to the Cumber River. Poplin stayed in Chatham about 12 months and moved to Moore County where he lived 3-4 years and then moved to Montgomery County where he has lived ever since. He had a certified affidavit from Hudson Taylor who lived in Chatham co when Poplin returned from service.

#3317 Lucy Poplin widow of William Poplin who died 2 June 1835 was placed on the roll 13 June 1835
24 April 1840 in Montgomery co NC, Lucy Poplin, aged 89 year appeared and swore that she was the widow of William Poplin late a pensioner of this county. She married William Poplin 1767 or 1768 prior to his service in the Revolutionary War. They married in Chatham County but she had no documentary evidence. She said they were married by Justice of the Peace, Simon Poe. William Poplin died in Montgomery co 2 Jan 1835.

The following research was contributed and gathered by W.A. Poplin

WILLIAM POPLIN 1749 - 1835

An American Revolutionary War Soldier
Born: February 1749
Died: June 2, 1835, Montgomery County, North Carolina. Married: Lucy 1752 to c. 1851/52

His name appears on the Pension List of American Revolutionary War Veterans.

His name also appears on a list of men on the Muster Role of Captain Joab Brooks' Company. Also, on this same list is William Poe who is believed to be the Great, Great, Great, Great, Great Grandfather of Betty Brown Poplin, wife of W. A. Poplin, III.

Also, with his 'pay voucher documents are a document showing Chatham Regimental Return made 23 September 1772. This is the front page of a book or log.

Enlisted in Chatham County, North Carolina. Prisoner of War on a prison ship in or near South Carolina. Escaped and returned to Chatham County, North Carolina. Spent three to four years in Moore County, North Carolina. Lived in Georgia for two years, 1800 to 1802. Was in Montgomery County for over thirty years until his death in 1835.

Lucy listed their marriage 1767/68. She was 16 and William 20. This would yield a birth date of 1747/48. The birth date of William per Lucy's recollection is not exact. However, in a later court document, William stated his birth date as February 1749.

Lucy lived to be at least 98 years old. In the 1850 Census, fifteen years after her husband's death, she is shown as living with the family of Frederick and Nancy Hinton on their farm in Stanly County. It specifically states her age as 98 years.

NOTE:
In 1841 the part of Montgomery County in which they lived became part of Stanly County.

• Military: Revolutionary war from 1768-1769.

William married Lucy 15,16 about 1767. Lucy was born between 1747 and 1748 and died after 1851.

She married William Poplin 1767 or 1768 prior to his service in the Revolutionary War. They married in Chatham county but she had no documentary evidence. She said they were married by Justice of the Peace, Simon Poe. William Poplin died in Montgomery co 2 Jan 1835.

Lucy listed their marriage 1767/68. She was 16 and William 20. This would yield a birth date of 1747/48. The birth date of William per Lucy's recollection is not exact. Ho1vever, in a later court document, William stated his birth date as February 1749.

Events

• Alt. Birth: In 1841 she was 89 when she applied for widow Pension - See W. Poplin, 1841.

• Residence: Census - Living with Frederick and Nancy Hinson, 1850. Lucy lived to be at least 98 years old. In the 1850 Census, fifteen years after her husband's death, she is shown as living with the family of Frederick and Nancy Hinson on their farm in Stanly County. It specifically states her age as 98 years. (Pg 9 of WA Poplin's Research)

12. Richard Poplin Sr. 17 was born between 1767 and 1777 18 and died on an unknown date. Other names for Richard were Henry, and Old Dick.

Notes:All descendants up to Richard Sr. (b~1766) are validated through census and other data.

William (b. 1748/49) is listed as Richard's (b., 1766) father based on information which suggested this and the time frame was correct and it matched surrounding census data. However he could also be the Richard that George (b. ~1720) lists as a son, thus making William his brother.

The 1850 census of Stanley Co. NC Record 741 lists Jeremiah 43 farmer, Nancy 35, John 19, Green 17, Richard 14, Mary 12, Macey 10, Caroline 8, Henry 6, Elizabeth 2. Richard would have to have been born in 1835 or 1836 to be 14 in the 1850 census. It appears that this Jeremiah is Richard's (b. 1766) father.

The "Poplin Patter" Volume 2, Issue 1 references a letter written in 1963 which references Jerry Poplin, Sr., as the son of Richard "Dick" Poplin, Sr. The 1860 census lists Jerry Poplin age 50 living with wife Nancy age 45 and children including Carolina 15, Henry 13, Eliza 11 and Jerry 7. We believe this is Jerry, Jr. inferred in the Poplin Patter letter. If true , it implies that the Richard Poplin age 84 in the 1850 census is Richard "Dick" Sr., born about 1766.

This is either penmanship error or a reference to grandchildren

Poplin Patter Vol 2 No 1

"In Ross District of Stanley County NC Jeremiah Poplin had a 17 year old son named Green Poplin in 1850. From the information sent me by Mrs. D.G. Harwood, that Jeremiah was Jerry Poplin Jr. son of Jerry Poplin Sr. who was killed during the civil war. and was buried at Canton Baptist Church. Jerry Poplin Sr. was the son of Richard "Dick" Poplin Sr. and Margaret Hatley."

In Chatham county through Dec 1777. He had 3 children. In about 1780 he moved with his father and mother to Moore county NC. In about 1784 they lived in Georgia. they returned to NC and lived in Montgomery County in about 1786

The following research was contributed and gathered by W. A. Poplin

RICHARD HENRY POPLIN 1772 -

Little is known about Richard Henry poplin. However, he probably was born in Chatham County near what is now Pittsboro, North Carolina between 1770 and 1777. We estimate that he was born around 1770 to 1772. His parents were married in 1769 and Court records show that they were in Chatham County at least through December 1777. Historical records regarding General Lincoln, at Savannah, Georgia tie with William Poplin's account and indicate that he was probably in the Revolutionary War during the period from 1778 to 1779. His wife and three children remained in Chatham County until his return and for one year thereafter.
In about 1780 Richard moved with his mother and father to Moore County, North Carolina. This statement is reinforced by the fact that his father William, cashed Revolutionary War Pay Vouchers in Moore County in 1782 and 1783. In about 1784 to 1786 they lived in Georgia. They returned to North Carolina and lived in Montgomery County beginning about 1786 or 1787.
Richard is the father of John Alexander Poplin who was born in Montgomery County, North Carolina in 1803.
Note: Included on the 1840 Census for Montgomery County, North Carolina is the name Richard Poplin, Sr. It indicates that he was 70 to 80 years old (this ties with his mother Lucy's account of his birth prior to his father's entrance into the Revolutionary War.) Included in his family at that time were his wife, also 70 to 80 years old; a female 30 to 40 years old, probably a daughter; and a child 5 to 10 years old, probably a grandchild. His son, John Poplin and family (the listing of family members match with our records of John's family) are also in the 1840 Census for Montgomery County.
His mother, Lucy Poplin is listed with a note that she was age 89. Also, she was listed in the 1850 Census in Stanly County as being 98 years old.

Richard married Anne. Anne was born in 1798.

+ 15 M    i. John Alexander Sr. Poplin was born on 5 Mar 1803, died on 26 Feb 1864 20,21 at age 60, and was buried in Aquadale, NC.

17 M    iii. Richard Jr. Poplin was born about 1807 25 and died about 1865 21 about age 58.

Data from Mark Abramson

In the same World Family Tree entry, there is a listing for John Poplin married to both Mary Anna Hinson and Polly Brown. They have all of John and Mary's children which match John Alexanger, but under Polly, they have entirely different family. This John's birth date is listed as 1820, instead of 1803. But the death date is EXACTLY the same, except that the location is listed as Kentucky.

In checking the census data, there is a John Poplin, born 1820, with wife Polly and a completely different family living in Kentucky (but born in NC), and he died between 1860 and 1870, since his name only appears on the 1860 census. This is complicated by the fact that, also in Kentucky in the 1870 census, is Henry R. Poplin, age 83 (i.e., born in the 18th century). You have Richard Henry Poplin, born in the 1770s, so I can see why someone probably thought they had a match, when they didn't.

The following research was gathered and contributed by W.A. Poplin
NOTE:
After the death of his first wife, Judith Willertha Murry, Thomas Jefferson Poplin married Eliza Adeline Swink of Anson County, N.C. They had an infant daughter who died un-named, date unknown. They were married on January 15, 1884. He was 52, she was 36. He died about 14 months later. At age 81, she applied for and received his Confederate Soldier's Pension from the State of North Carolina.

NOTE:
Eliza Adeline Swink Poplin, second wife and widow of Thomas J. Poplin is also buried at Olivet Methodist Church. Her grave is a few steps to the left of that of Thomas Jefferson. Also buried there are other members of her Swink family. She was active in the Olivet Methodist Church and was known as "Mrs. Adeline Poplin" until her death. She did not like motorized vehicles and her casket was taken from the house to the church for burial in a horse-drawn wagon. (I received this information from Mr. Elmer Goodwin of Lilesville who actually attended her funeral as a young boy.)

NOTE:
Thomas Jefferson Poplin apparently grew up in Stanly County, but records show he enlisted in the Confederate Army in Anson County. He had moved there with his wife Judith to work on the farm of the Lindsey family. He returned to Anson County after the war and lived there on his 3D-acre farm, until his death in 1885. His house still remains. It is located near the Olivet Methodist Church in Lilesville, Anson County, North Carolina. Stanly County was cut from Montgomery County where he was born. Montgomery County was cut from Anson County and Anson was cut from Bladen County, N.C.

NOTE:
Thomas Jefferson Poplin's war record (and those of his brothers) can be found in public libraries throughout North Carolina See: A Roster of Troops 1861 to 1865
There were five sons of John Alexander Poplin who were Confederate soldiers. The sixth son, David W. Poplin was only eleven years old when the war began, too young to be a soldier.

NOTE:
T. J. Poplin was apparently literate and he was active in the Olivet Methodist Church. In 1870 he wrote a letter to a friend in Aquadale, saying that the Olivet members were using a log house where slaves had pulled lint from cotton seed, indicating that the 1843 church had burned. The members were talking about building a new church (which they later did). T. J. Poplin was one of Olivet's song leaders, using a tuning fork to lead the singing. (The early church had no piano or organ). His son Jim later led the singing.

NOTE: From the local newspaper account:
April 30, 1885 - A suicide occurred in our county last week. On last Thursday morning before day, Mr. Thomas Poplin, a farmer in the eastern part of the county, left his house, and going to the well, deliberately pulled off the covering and jumped in and drowned himself. As soon as the family became aware of his absence, search was made, and his body was found in the well. No cause is assigned for the act, though there was a suspicion that he intended some injury to himself. He leaves a wife and three children. At this time his children were all grown and he had remarried' following the death of his wife of 34 years.

D.W. Poplin b.2-11-1850 d.12-28-1903 Wife: Sarah Lowder b.7-15-18521 d.5-19-1922

The cemetery lists David Wesley as D.W. (not W.W.)
The bride list documents D.W. as the father for Carrie, Arrannah and Maggie. I think Wesley W. was a census error.
Margaret has a 2 year difference in her census birthday but the names match the parents and the age is very close. The same problem exists with the census error on John's Poplins age.
Sarah A's birth date matches Arannah in the bride list and the parents also match.
None of the children listed in the 1900 census would have shown up on the 1880 census.

Richard married Rebecca Nash,78 daughter of Nash and Nancy, on 9 May 1858 in Stanly County, NC.36 Rebecca died on an unknown date. Another name for Rebecca was Becky.

1st Wife - Richard Poplin married Rebecca Nash on May 9, 1858. The minister was L. Green, Justice of the Peace. This would make her the mother of Henry Washington and James. This would also make her the first wife. There is some talk that Rebecca may have been Cherokee, but this has not been validated.

2nd wife - We have handwritten notes from Lectie Harwood a retired schoolteacher, dated October 10, page 4, 1969 stating "Dick who married an Avette moved to Anson County. Also a letter dated September 15, 1969 listing Dick Sr. married to Margaret Hatley and their children as Richard Jr. who married Avette and had two children - John Poplin who married Elizabeth Coley and David Wesley. Richard' second wife Mary E. had these two children. I wonder if E. stands for Evette?

3rd wife - Nancy (married after 1887)

From Laura Legrand
Don't know if you all have happened on this, but I have found Rebecca Nash,
first wife of Richard Poplin, twice in census records. She is listed as
Becky Nash. The 1850 Burnssville District, Union Co., NC lists her with
her mother, Nancy, and siblings. She had a brother named Washington,
thus, Henry Washington Poplin! How bout that. In 1860, she is listed with
Richard and son James F. I believe I have Nancy in 1860 as wife of William
Nash.

Notes:Notes from John E. Poplin's Research
William "Henry" Poplin is first in the 1850 Albemarle Dist#9 census as Henry Poplin born 1844 son of Jerimiah and Nancy. In 1860 suddenly his year of birth changed to 1847 in the census record living with the same parents, although Jeremiah is now listed as Jerry. In 1870 there is a William Poplin born in that 1847 married to a Margaret with a son of John. Both Jeremiah and Nancy Poplin were listed in the census as "can't read" and "can't write." In 1850 vs 1860 census for Albemarle, Stanly Co. not only Wilm. Henry's year of birth changed but so did three of the other sibling (Mary/Polly, Macey, and Caroline).

I can tell you I am a direct descendant of William H Poplin of Albemarle Township, Stanley County NC from the 1870 census records. William H, my great great great grandfather married a Margaret Jane Long. William had two relatives (not sure if they were brothers or not) on that same report, Steven Henry and Nathan Poplin. Steven H was listed as "keeping an Irish Mill" while William H was a farmer with $1200 in real estate worth and Nathan was also a farmer with $1500 in real estate. I have always been told the Poplin surname was of Irish-Scottish Decent.

William and Margaret had a son named John DeBerry Poplin who m. Maggie Lena Perry. Their son James Theodore Poplin m. Katharyn Salome Maher. Their son, my Granddad John Maher Poplin Sr. married the Barnes family of Rocky Mount. They have 4 children, one of which is my father. James and Katharyn's daughter Edna Mae is my oldest living Poplin relative. Her two brothers, including my granddad died years ago.
